Brentford Families - Norris

Rebecca Norris writes

My father was originally from Brentford, his name is Rob Norris. His fathers name was Charles William Norris and mothers name was Mary Helen Clements.

Charles William Norris came from Daventry Northamptonshire. However there was a Brentford Norris family too: see details below. No connection has been found between Rebecca's family and the family below, but it is included in the hope there are Norris descendants who may find it useful.

Norris family tree

The following speculative tree has been compiled using census returns and FreeBMD. If you think this is your family it would be a good idea to purchase certificates to prove links.

There appear to be three marriages between the Norris and Gearey families: the Gearey family ran a brewery in Catherine Wheel Yard, Brentford, which was later taken over by the Gomm family.

(James?) Norris (died pre 1841): married Sophia; there are death registrations of a John Norris and James Norris in Brentford in 1849, either of which may be Sophia's husband (as the first son was called James I think he has the edge); there is a marriage at St Martin in the Fields of a James Norris and Sophia Dicken in 1815; in 1841 Sophia was living in Sion Lane, Isleworth with her family:

  • James Norris (1811/16 - ): market gardener; he is recorded as the head of household and it appears he took over the market garden following the death of his father
  • Sophia Norris (1820/21 - ): married William Gearey, a brewer in Catherine Wheel Yard, in 1845 in Brentford; no children
  • Martha Norris (1824/5 - ): living at home in 1841
  • Richard Norris (1825/6 - ): at home in 1841, occupation 'Navy'
  • Mary Norris (1825/6 - ): at home in 1841; living with her sister Sophia Gearey (nee Norris) in 1851
  • George Norris (1828/9 - ): a tanner; married Ann Gearey (probably: there is a possible 1844 marriage in Brentford); by 1851 George was a tanner employing 6 men at 182 High Street Brentford; he had three children by this date:
    • George Norris (1845/6 - ): born Isleworth
    • Ann Norris (1846/7 - ): born Isleworth
    • John Norris (1850 - ): born New Brentford
  • Jemima Norris (1829/30 - 1908): at a school in Upper Butts, Brentford in 1841; married Charles Gearey, brother to William Gearey the brewer, in 1859; she was living at the brewery house in Catherine Wheel Yard in 1861; three daughters
  • Ellen Norris (1831/2 - ): at a school in Upper Butts, Brentford in 1841
  • Sarah Norris (1832/3 - ): at a school in Upper Butts, Brentford in 1841
  • John Norris (1834/5 - ): at home in 1841
  • Caroline Norris (1838 - ): at home in 1841
