Teachers and others working in Education around 1901

Julie Jakeway wrote in 2019 asking about Dame schools operating in Brentford, around 1901.

It was concluded they are difficult to pin down, but the searches did uncover details of many who worked in Education who lived in Brentford at the turn of the 20th century.

Searches in Findmypast of the 1901 census for those with occupation *teacher*, *school*, *govern*, *tutor* make up the bulk of the entries in the table below. The list was augmented by a search of Kelly's 1899 directory, which lists schools and their masters and mistresses: see a list of schools operating at the time.

Around 84 individuals were teachers, or similar, and around ¾ were women. The remainder includes Governesses, Music teachers and Tutors, some of whom worked from home. Those identified as Domestic governesses, living with a family, are not included in the table below, those where 'Governess' has been annotated 'school' are.

Census night was on Sunday, 31 March and Good Friday followed, so the teachers may have been on holiday when the census was taken. The census may include teachers who worked outside Brentford; similarly some teachers in Brentford schools may have been outside the town on census night and not made it on to the list.

The table below lists people in surname order. Columns are:

  • Forename
  • Surname
  • Date of Birth - from their age in 1901
  • Birth county (the original entry usually gives a placename too)
  • Parish - where they were living at the time of the census
  • Occupation
  • Notes
  • Sources - in addition to the census
