The Barge Aground, 362 High Street pre 1940

Brick built pub on corner, date plaque 1902

Peter Reeve provided this photo of the Barge Aground, which his father used to run in the 1940s through to 1952. The photo shows a newsagents with an advert for Marcella cigars in the window: this shop was bombed out in WW2.

Beyond the pub a carriers operated: this was Carter Paterson & Co Ltd from around 1890 to the 1930s, although the P & Co sign suggests a different name.

Peter has also sent a postwar photo of the Barge Aground and some war time memories.
