Advertising sign, H J Robinson, ca 1981

Painted advertising sign for H J Robinson on the side of a property Quentin Pickard provided this photo 'a wall advertisement for H J Robinson Builder, 1981. What caught my eye about this was not only the original signwriting (which I suppose must have been 50 or more years old in 1981), but also the crass 'bodyshop' advert fixed over part of it, and also the extraordinary statement 'established 1700'. ... The sign must have disappeared many years ago - it was near the canal bridge, I think in the SE corner.'

The list of inhabitants of New Brentford in 1811 includes a James Robinson in the area around no. 216, and H J Robinson was in business in 1841 at 216. By 1851 the business had moved to no. 155 where it remained until the 1930s. It will be a challenge tracing the business back to 1700!

More about no. 155 and area.
