Will of Charles Piper, 1856

Abstract of will

This is the last will and testament of me Charles Piper of the Six Bells New Brentford victualler ...

... I give and bequeath unto my dear wife mary Piper ... one thousand pounds free of legacy duty ... and all ... my household furniture, linen & wearing apparel, plate, pictures and china

... I give and devise my freehold house in The Ham New Brentford in the occupation of William BOWDEN unto my said wife ...and after her decease I give & devise the same unto my young friend Emma TREDWELL, now stopping with me

... I also give and bequeath unto the said Emma TREDWELL ... £500 ... at arriving at 25 years of age or marriage

... all the rest ... of my real and personal estate .... I give devise and bequeath ... my brother James Piper of Brentford End, baker, and to my friend Henry HARRIS of the same place, currier & to Charles WILD of Old Brentford, baker

... all and every the children of my brother Thomas

... all and every the children of my brother James

... I appoint my said brother James, Henry HARRIS & Charles WILD Executors & Trustees

The testator

Charles PIPER was aged 35 in the 1851 census, living at the Six Bells (149 High Street) with his wife Mary and niece Emma TREDWELL, who was 7, plus servants. Ten years previously Charles was living at the Six Bells with Thomas Piper, 67, presumably his father.

The witnesses & executor

Henry HARRIS: probably a neighbour to Charles; at 150 High Street Henry Harris, currier and general dealer, lived in 1841, 1851 & 1861 censuses.

Charles WILD: a baker at 259 High Street in 1841, 1851 & 1861.

James PIPER: the 1881 census includes a James PIPER, retired baker, at 157 High Street, on the opposite side of the High Street and near to the Six Bells; the Six Bells was run by Thomas PIPER, presumably the other brother, in 1861. Thomas was 51 at the time. He remained there in 1861 & 1871 and was recorded in an 1874 trade directory at the Six Bells. His death was registered in Brentford in 1880, at the age of 70 and the Six Bells was run by James Dykes at the time of the 1881 census.
