Will of John King, 1847

Abstract of will

I John KING, of Old Brentford ... auctioneer

... in consciousness of having given & conveyed to my son John my copyhold house & premises in Old Brentford ... late in my occupation I give & bequeath unto my daughter Jane the wife of George BATHOST of Marylebone Street, Golden Square in the county of Middlesex (my?) copyhold house & premises on Smith Hill Old Brentford late in the occupation of Mr DOUGLAS and also my copyhold house & premises situate opposite the Royal Hotel in Old Brentford now in the occupation of Mr STEVENS and also my copyhold house & premises at Ealing ... now in the occupation of Miss ALLEN ... to the use of my son's daughter

... I give & bequeath unto my said son John all my stock in trade

... all the rest of my personal property I give & bequeath unto my dear wife Mary Ann

... on her decease I give, devise & bequeath ... unto my son's son and daughter

... dated 7th December 1844

... witnessed by Ann CULLEN, Castle Inn ; Robt Thos FLETCHER, solicitor, Brentford

... proved at London on 24th June 1847 by the oaths of Mary Ann KING, widow, the Relict and John KING the son, the executors

The testator

John King lived at no. 240 and was '60' (ie 60 - 64 years old at the time of the 1841 census. Living with him were his wife, 'Marian', and son John (20) and a female servant. All were born in Middlesex.

The legatees

John KING: the son. In 1851 John junior was recorded as an auctioneer and was living at his father's home, 240 High Street, with his wife, four young children, including a son Marshall, and two servants. He remained in the business, being succeeded by his son Marshall between 1861 & 1871.

Jane BATHOST: the daughter. Not found in the 1841 or 1851 censuses. Two possible George BATHURSTs in an 1846 trade directory for London but neither at the address Marylebone Street.

The witnesses & executor

Mary Ann KING, his wife: a Mary A. King, widow, born London ca 1783, proprietor of houses, was living at no. 309 at the time of the 1851 census; a companion, Caroline CLACK was living with her; there is a death registered of a Mary Ann King in Brentford in the April - June quarter of 1851.

Ann CULLEN: presumably Ann, wife of William Cullen, landlord of The Castle in 1841, 51 & 61,

Robert Thomas FLETCHER: an 'attorney' of this name is recorded in the 1826 Pigot Directory of Middlesex
