Will of Philip Norbury, 1845

Abstract of will

I Philip Norbury of New Brentford ... book seller

... I direct that my funeral may be performed with as little expense as possible

... I give to my nephew William Philip Norbury all the printed books which may be in my possession at the time of my decease not being part of the stock in trade and the two mahogany bookcases now in my dwelling house

... to my niece Mary Ann Norbury ... £19 19s

... to my youngest nephew John Wilkinson Norbury my gold watch and its appendages and also my wearing apparel

... to Ann GILBERT eldest daughter of George GILBERT of Old Street Road tallow chandler the sum of £10

... to Mary Ann WAITE daughter of John WAITE of Bishopsgate Street Without a pearl broach with hair given me by Mrs Maria DURDIN (?)

... to my sister Mary Ann Norbury ... all that my freehold dwelling house, shop with land, garden and appurtenances subject to a mortgage of £500

The testator

Philip NORBURY was the son of Philip Norbury the printer who died in 1830. PN junior ran the book selling business which was at no. 110 High Street in 1823. He was living at this address with his sister in the 1841 census. Access to Archives has reference in a document dated 1807 to Philip Norbury the younger and the elder, printers; also a Henry Norbury, printer.

The legatees, witnesses & executor

William Philip NORBURY: darling nephew & godson; in the 1841 census William NORBURY, aged 24 was living with Philip and Marian Norbury at the High Street property. He was an assistant. Ten years later Mary Ann Norbury, unmarried, headed the household (aged 71) and William was recorded as her nephew, a printer, aged 34, born Brentford. He remained in Brentford running the business and died there in 1893.

Mary Ann NORBURY: (niece); in 1851 a Mary Ann Norbury, aged 32, born Brentford was working as a teacher in Brighton.

John Wilkinson NORBURY: youngest nephew; a John Wilkinson Norbury married in Southampton in 1845.

Anne GILBERT: was living in the Norbury household in 1841; she was an assistant aged 24. She remained at the Norbury's in 1851 and was a legatee of Elizabeth Norbury in 1828.

Mary Ann NORBURY: sister; as noted above she was living with her brother in 1841; in 1851 she remained head of household, aged 71.

Thomas JULLION: a local solicitor.
