These properties were part of the Montgomreys Timber Yard, which had a frontage of over 390 feet to the High STreet when the 1909/10 Valuation took place. Both 77 and 78 were lived in during the C19 (see link below for more details). The timber yard had a wharf behind it and saw mills and many other buildings were on the site.
